Smiles and science magic! These curious kids in Harlan are diving into discovery — and we’re just getting started. Excited for all the possibilities this partnership brings!HCES 3rd grade students in Mrs. Stork's classroom launched an OpenSciEd unit to figure out, "How can we design objects to balance and move in different ways?" In this lesson, students build a sculpture to explore how they work. They'll work to compare balanced sculptures to balanced and moving sculptures.
Harlan was a 2025 STEM ScaleUp award winner. All teachers attended professional development this summer provided by Green Hills AEA and was awarded an #OpenSciEd materials kit as part of the grant. Kim Wise, GHAEA Science consultant, will provide continued support.
The STEM ScaleUp Grant provides high-quality STEM education programs to PK-12 youth along with training for educators to implement effectively. Since 2012, Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council has partnered with STEM education programs reaching up to 100,000 students each year and engaging them in exemplary STEM curriculum. Year 1 of Preschool SDI professional development kicked off with over 50 participants from both LEAs and AEA. The session focused on building a strong foundation in Preschool SDI by introducing the SDI Framework, DEC Practices, and the RIOT/SCIL. Participants also explored how to use children’s strengths, preferences, and interests to guide instruction. Teams were actively engaged across the day!
